To welcome the New Year, residents from various parts of Dhaka gathered on rooftops or open fields to set off fireworks in unison. Some even released sky lanterns.
Although law enforcement authorities had instructed against such celebrations to prevent untoward incidents, security personnel patrolled various areas of the city, conducting checks in key locations for safety. Traffic was controlled in several areas to maintain order.
Despite the restrictions, Dhaka residents celebrated the New Year with great enthusiasm, hosting parties on a large scale or in smaller settings. Many organized rooftop barbecues, cake-cutting ceremonies, and other festivities.
