A person in the country has been found to be infected with the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), as confirmed by Dr. Ahmed Nausher Alam, the head of the Virology Department at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control, and Research (IEDCR).
He also mentioned that another bacterium has been detected in the person’s body alongside the HMPV virus, and more details will be provided later.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, HMPV has been spreading globally, raising new concerns. The infection was first detected in China at the beginning of January.
Following that, the virus was identified in Japan, and now it has also spread to Malaysia and India. This influenza-like virus has already affected numerous individuals.
Health experts have warned that it could potentially become as severe as COVID-19, although the World Health Organization has not yet issued any alert concerning the virus.
On December 31, 2019, COVID-19 infections were first reported in Wuhan, China, and the World Health Organization named it “2019-nCoV.” By May 14, 2020, the virus had spread to over 213 countries, affecting 171,527,453 individuals globally. Among them, 3,566,512 people died.
Experts are concerned that a new pandemic, similar to COVID-19, might emerge in 2025. However, it is still unclear which disease might develop into a pandemic. Despite this, the spread of HMPV remains a source of concern for them.
HMPV is sometimes referred to as seasonal flu. The primary symptom of this virus is respiratory complications, although the full extent of its danger remains unknown.
It is unclear how severe the virus could become or the potential threats it might pose to the body and life.
What is the HMPV Virus: The HMPV is an extremely small infectious agent that can only reproduce inside a living cell. Viruses can infect all forms of life, from plants and animals to bacteria and archaea.
They are found in nearly every ecosystem on Earth and are the most numerous biological entities.
First discovered in 2001, the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been present in humans for over 60 years, making it not a novel virus like COVID-19. It primarily affects children under the age of 14 and the elderly.
In China, there has been a recent increase in hospital visits due to the spread of this virus.
Dr. Tahmina Shirin, Director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control, and Research (IEDCR) in Bangladesh, emphasized that this is not a new virus and that there is no cause for concern regarding it in Bangladesh.
She noted that COVID-19 was different and new, which is why it became a global pandemic.
What Are the Symptoms of This Virus: The symptoms of HMPV start with common cold-like issues such as fever, nasal congestion, cough, or shortness of breath.
In more severe cases, the infection can escalate, requiring hospitalization. In some instances, the virus can cause bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, or ear infections.
Dr. Tahmina Shirin further explained that the virus spreads in the same way as other respiratory viruses. It is similar to an influenza-type virus, with symptoms including fever, cold, cough, and congestion.
