Essential health tips for Ramadan

Ramadan is a sacred month for Muslims, during which they fast for a specific period each day. However, diabetic patients often worry about how to manage their diet while fasting. Dr. Dwipen Roy Chowdhury provides several health tips to help diabetic patients observe Ramadan while staying healthy.

Essential Guidelines for Diabetics During Ramadan

Start Iftar with a Date:

Diabetics can begin Iftar with one date, which is rich in fiber, minerals, and vitamins. It does not spike blood sugar levels and is beneficial for overall health.

Opt for Natural Fruit Juice Instead of Sugary Drinks:

Sugar-sweetened beverages can raise blood sugar levels. Instead, diabetics can drink natural fruit juices like bael, watermelon, ripe mango, ripe papaya, or orange juice without added sugar. Coconut water and lemon-salt water help maintain hydration, while yogurt-based drinks with a pinch of salt can also be beneficial.

Include Protein and Vegetables in Suhoor:

Suhoor should include protein-rich foods such as eggs, lentils, fish, or chicken. However, it is best to limit beef consumption to once or twice a week. Never fast on just a glass of water, as this can lead to hypoglycemia. Diabetics can consume all types of vegetables at Suhoor, but leafy greens should be avoided at night to prevent digestive issues.

Avoid Overeating and Fried Foods:

Avoid excessive eating during Iftar and limit deep-fried items like fritters, samosas, and chickpea snacks. Instead, opt for healthier protein sources like raw chickpeas with ginger and mint or boiled chickpeas mixed with cucumber and tomatoes for a salad. Sweet and sour fruit salads are also a good option. After Iftar, consider eating roti, oats, milk, or yogurt instead of rice.

Medication and Insulin Management:

Never adjust insulin or medication dosage on your own—consult a doctor before making any changes. Take your meals on time, and do not delay Iftar. If insulin is needed, take it 10-15 minutes before Iftar.

Precautions for Uncontrolled Diabetes:

Always carry glucose-mixed water. If blood sugar drops too low, break the fast immediately and seek medical advice if you feel weak.

By following these guidelines, diabetic patients can fast safely and maintain good health throughout Ramadan.
