In the budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year, no additional tax will be imposed on cigarettes. This information was shared by the Chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), Md. Abdur Rahman Khan.
He made this statement on Wednesday (March 19) during a pre-budget discussion held in the conference room of the NBR building.
Highlighting that the tax on bidis is lower than that on cigarettes, the NBR Chairman warned that if the production of counterfeit bidis is not stopped, strict legal action will be taken against the Bidi Owners' Association.
Abdur Rahman Khan further stated that the expected revenue from VAT is not being realized. If consumers pay VAT but do not collect receipts, revenue will not increase. To encourage consumers to take VAT receipts, a lottery initiative is being introduced where winners can receive up to 100,000 BDT as a reward.
