Blazing April

Bangladesh braces for heatwaves and storms

Update : 03 Apr 2025, 13:00

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecasted not only mild but also moderate and intense heatwaves throughout the month of April.

Additionally, the country may experience cyclones and nor’westers. Rain and thunderstorms are expected in some areas on April 5, followed by widespread rainfall across the country on April 6, which may temporarily reduce the intensity of the heatwave.

The BMD issued the forecast in its weather bulletin at 6 PM on Wednesday.

Rising Temperatures and Rainfall Predictions

Meteorologist Shahnaz Sultana stated that on Thursday, the weather will remain mostly dry across the country, with partly cloudy skies in some areas. Both day and night temperatures are expected to rise slightly.

Friday: Isolated rain or thunderstorms may occur in some areas of Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, and Sylhet divisions.

Saturday: Similar weather is expected in parts of Mymensingh, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions.

In the past 24 hours (until 6 AM on Wednesday), the highest temperature recorded in the country was 38°C in Rajshahi, while Dhaka reached 36°C. The rising temperature trend is expected to continue.

Heatwave and Storm Outlook for April

According to Meteorologist Omar Faruq, long-term forecasts indicate that one or two low-pressure systems may form in the Bay of Bengal this month, with at least one potentially developing into a cyclone.

Additionally, Bangladesh may experience: 5 to 6 days of light to moderate thunderstorms with hail; 1 to 3 days of intense nor’westers; 2 to 4 mild to moderate heatwaves; and 1 or 2 intense heatwaves.

The heatwave is expected to peak until April 4, after which rainfall on April 5 and 6 may provide some relief. However, high temperatures are likely to persist throughout the month.
