Chinese netizens mock US tariffs on social media

Update : 09 Apr 2025, 15:54

As Beijing prepares to officially respond to the latest US tariffs, Chinese state media and social media users have taken to ridiculing the move online.

A trending hashtag on Sina Weibo declares, “The US is fighting a trade war while asking for more eggs,” UNB reports.

The phrase, launched by China’s state broadcaster CCTV, highlights the irony of the US seeking help from allies to secure egg imports amid a shortage caused by avian flu.

Egg prices were a major talking point during last year’s US presidential election. Trump won with promises to bring down living costs.

“Shooting oneself in the foot can be said to be retribution. Not only are eggs expensive, but food, clothing and other daily necessities are also very expensive,” one user commented on Weibo, as reported by Hong Kong-based outlet HK01.

“Haha, such a big country doesn’t even have the most basic eggs,” the same comment added.
