WRC for 600 JS seats

Update : 19 Apr 2025, 22:42

The Women’s Reform Commission (WRC), in its report, has proposed raising the number of seats in the Jatiya Sangsad to 600.

Shireen Parveen Huq, Chairperson of the WRC, made the statement during a press briefing on Saturday evening at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road in Dhaka. The briefing took place after the commission submitted its report to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.

According to the proposal, each constituency would feature two seats—one general and one reserved for women. Notably, both seats are to be filled through direct elections, aiming to ensure greater gender parity in parliamentary representation.

Earlier that afternoon, at 4:30 PM, members of the Women’s Reform Commission, led by Shireen Parveen Huq, submitted their report to the Chief Adviser at the State Guest House Jamuna.

Present at the report submission were commission members including Mahin Sultan, Senior Fellow at BRAC Institute of Governance and Development; Fauzia Karim Firoz, President of the Bangladesh National Women Lawyers’ Association; and Kalpana Akter, President of the Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation.

The ten-member Women’s Reform Commission was formed by the interim government on November 18, with Shireen Parveen Huq—founding member of Naripokkho and human rights activist—appointed as its chair.
