Initial reports suggest that Iran will send several brigades to secure its border with Pakistan in the run up to a possible military confrontation between India and Pakistan.
Earlier, Iran and Pakistan agreed to strengthen border security and enhance cooperation in combating cross-border terrorism.
In November 2024, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi visited Islamabad and emphasized the need for improved coordination between the two countries to strengthen border security and prevent terrorist attacks. Both sides pledged to reinforce border management and increase cooperation in addressing mutual security challenges.
It is worth noting that in the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, 25 Indian tourists and 1 Nepali citizen were killed. India has accused Pakistan of supporting terrorist groups in Kashmir, a claim Pakistan has denied.
In response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack, India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, closed its borders, ordered Pakistani nationals to return to their country, and reduced the number of diplomats at the Indian High Commission in Pakistan. In retaliation, Pakistan has declared Indian diplomats persona non grata, canceled Indian visas, and suspended Indian air and border access. Pakistan has stated that any interference in its water supply will be considered an act of war.
