The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will soon launch a joint operation to stop battery-operated auto-rickshaws from plying on Dhaka's main roads, DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz has announced. He also mentioned that a campaign will soon be launched to shut down auto-rickshaw manufacturing workshops and charging stations within Dhaka city.
He made these remarks on Saturday (April 26) around noon while inaugurating road, sidewalk, and drainage construction work in Mirpur Pallabi, Dhaka.
Mohammad Ejaz stated that operations to close down the workshops and charging stations for auto-rickshaws within the city will begin soon. The DMP has already compiled a list of these workshops and charging stations. They plan to conduct raids at night to shut them down.
The DNCC administrator urged local homeowners' associations to refrain from allowing illegal auto-rickshaws to enter residential areas.
He said, “Do not allow anything outside the original residential plans of your neighborhoods. Do not permit commercial activities in residential areas. If the city corporation and the local community work together, it will be easier to eliminate illegal auto-rickshaws and unauthorized street vendors.”
He also requested city residents not to purchase plots from housing companies if those plots include water bodies, warning that it could cause problems in the future.
During the event, he mentioned DNCC’s efforts to recover the canals in the Pallabi Eastern Housing area, noting that they even had to pursue legal action to protect the canals. In his inaugural speech, the DNCC administrator also called for planned tree planting in the Pallabi area.
He said, “I request you not to plant small trees but larger ones. Plan it out — plant krishnachura (royal poinciana) trees along one road, and sonalu (golden shower) trees along another. This will help create a beautiful environment.”
