The Election Commission (EC) has announced BNP leader Engineer Ishraque Hossain as the new mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
Sources at the EC said that the commission issued the gazette on Sunday, based on a court directive.
Earlier, on April 22, the Election Commission (EC) had sent a letter to the Ministry of Law seeking its opinion on whether a gazette should be issued declaring Ishraque as the mayor of Dhaka South.
After receiving a positive response, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) held a meeting with other commissioners and officials, where it was decided that the gazette would be issued that very night.
