Fourteen people lost their lives in a single day due to lightning strikes and storms across Bangladesh on Sunday, occurring between the afternoon and night.
In Brahmanbaria's Nasirnagar and Akhaura, five people, including children and farmers, were killed by lightning. The incidents took place in Tekanagar village of Nasirnagar Sadar Union, the embankment area of Gokarna Union, Volakut Union, and Akhaura.
Four of the deceased have been identified as: Abdur Razzak (35) from Tekanagar village, Nasirnagar Sadar Union; Sheikh Selim Mia (60) from Akhaura; Jamir Khan (22) from Akhaura; and Zakia (7) from Durgapur village, Volakut Union.
In Kishoreganj's Bhairab, Kuliarchar, and Karimganj, four people died from lightning strikes on Sunday afternoon. Three of them have been identified: Faruk Mia (60) from Rasulpur village, Sadeqpur Union, Bhairab; Faisal Mia (28) from Shrinagar Union; and Kabir Mia (25) from Hazarinagar village, Chaysuti Union, Kuliarchar
Meanwhile, a farmworker died and another was injured in Nalitabari of Sherpur while collecting harvested paddy. The incident occurred in the evening at Andharupara village. The deceased, Khobir Uddin (45), was the son of Jalal Uddin from Kapasia, while the injured, Sakul Uddin (20), is the son of Jamal Uddin from the same area.
In Mymensingh Sadar, two people lost their lives due to falling trees during a nor’wester storm. The incidents took place in separate locations in Ghagra Union. The victims were identified as Sajib Mia (25) and Suruj Mia (70).
According to locals, during the storm, construction worker Sajib Mia took shelter under a tree near the school behind Morakuri Bazar. The tree was uprooted in the storm and fell on him, killing him instantly.
Meanwhile, farmer Suruj Mia was standing beside a fish pond in the same area when a branch broke off and struck him, resulting in his death. The incident was confirmed by Shafiqul Islam Khan, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Model Police Station.
Additionally, a young man was killed by lightning in Ajmiriganj of Habiganj, and another person died from a lightning strike in Manda of Naogaon.
