Trump embarks on Middle East trip

Update : 13 May 2025, 10:17

US President Donald Trump sets off on his first major foreign trip after returning to the White House for his second term.

Trump will land in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday before traveling on to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to the Deutsche Welle.

The president will meet with business and diplomatic partners in the Gulf while at the same time deepening US business ties in the region.

The question of the future of Gaza will likely come up — Trump has proposed relocating the enclave's population to build a "Riviera of the Middle East" — as well as the state of ongoing talks with Iran about its uranium enrichment program.

Although Trump has been unable to deliver on his promise to immediately end Israel's war in Gaza, the Islamist militia Hamas offered a goodwill gesture before his arrival when it released Israeli-American soldier Edan Alexander on Monday after 19 months in captivity there.

The president is not planning on visiting Israel during his time in the region.
