The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will shut down charging points and production workshops for illegal battery-powered rickshaws.
Besides, the battery-run rickshaws will no longer be allowed to operate on the main streets of the capital, according to the DNCC.
On Tuesday, over a hundred rickshaws were destroyed during a raid in the Asad Gate area. These illegal rickshaws will be replaced by vehicles designed with approved blueprints, which will soon be introduced on the roads.
DNCC will begin training drivers and issuing licenses within this month. Simultaneously, it will also shut down workshops and charging points for battery-powered rickshaws.
Yesterday, DNCC conducted an operation to remove battery-powered rickshaws from Dhanmondi's old Road 27 to Asad Gate. More than a hundred rickshaws were dismantled for not following the regulations.
According to officials, the unrestricted movement of these rickshaws on the capital's main roads has increased since August of last year. Reckless speed, driving in the wrong direction, and other violations have often led to accidents.
DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz stated that battery-powered rickshaws will no longer be allowed on the capital's main roads. Training for drivers of rickshaws with approved designs will begin this month, and licenses will be issued. These approved rickshaws will be permitted to operate within designated areas at fixed fares.
Earlier, DNCC announced the ban of battery-powered rickshaws in Gulshan and a few other areas, but it could not enforce the ban due to a lack of supervision.
