Protests flared up again in Los Angeles

Update : 09 Jun 2025, 11:22

Protests have flared up again in Los Angeles, as demonstrators against immigration raids face off with law enforcement for a third day.

The National Guard units deployed by President Donald Trump use tear gas to force back protesters. Protesters gathered in downtown LA have been told to leave immediately by police - hours after officers dispersed demonstrators blocking a major freeway in the city, BBC reports.

Trump defends his move to send in the National Guard, saying they will "make sure there's law and order". California's governor Gavin Newsom urges Trump to revoke the troop deployment - and has threatened to sue the administration over what he called an "illegal" act.

Downtown Los Angeles has been declared an "unlawful assembly" area by the LAPD, following a third day of demonstrations in the city. Protests are continuing into the night.

At least ten people were arrested on Sunday during the unrest, prompted by immigration raids by US officials, BBC reports.

Law enforcement officers have used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters, who forced a major freeway to close. Around 2,000 National Guard troops have been deployed to the protests, while 500 Marines are in a "prepared to deploy" status at a base around 230km east of Los Angeles.

US President Donald Trump has defended his unprecedented deployment of National Guard troops - without a request from California Governor Gavin Newsom - as necessary for "law and order"

Gavin Newsom has said that Trump's actions are "illegal" and "immoral", and has threatened to sue the administration, while Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said "what we're seeing in Los Angeles is chaos that is provoked by the administration" and called on protesters to demonstrate peacefully.
