Onion prices drop as imports from India resume

Update : 20 Aug 2025, 10:30

After being closed for a long period of 4 months and 20 days, nearly 2,000 tons of onions have entered the country through the Bhomra land port in just three days. With the increase in supply, the price of local onions has decreased by 4 to 7 Taka per kilogram.

On Tuesday (August 19), local onions were sold for 65 to 67 Taka per kilogram, while Indian onions were sold at 60 Taka per kilogram. Traders have stated that if supply continues to rise, prices will drop further.

Abdul Aziz, a wholesale trader from Sultanpur Barobazar, said, "As soon as Indian onions entered the market, the price of local onions began to fall."

Abu Musa, General Secretary of the Bhomra C&F Agent Association, stated, "After being closed for a long time, onions are now arriving regularly. From Sunday to Tuesday, nearly 2,000 tons of onions have entered the country through Bhomra port on 70 trucks. If imports continue, the market will stabilize quickly."

Revenue Officer Md. Russell Ahmed said, "In just three days, nearly 2,000 tons of onions have entered the country. The effects of this are already being felt in the market. In the coming days, supply will continue to increase."

Sathkhira District Agricultural Marketing Officer Saleh Mohammad Abdullah said, "We are regularly monitoring the markets. A mobile court is being conducted under the coordination of the district administration's executive magistrate. Even though the supply has increased, the goal is to ensure that farmers are not harmed. The price has already dropped by 6 to 7 Taka per kilogram in the market. Further price reductions are likely in the future."
