Will Smith resigns from Oscars Academy over Rock slap

Update : 02 Apr 2022, 10:28

US actor Will Smith has resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the wake of slapping Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards ceremony on earlier this week.

Smith said noted that he had “directly responded” to their disciplinary hearing notice, and “fully accept any and all consequences” for his actions.

“My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable,” Smith wrote. “I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.”

The actor concluded by stating that “change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason.”

During Sunday's 94th Academy Award ceremony, the actor walked on stage and slapped Chris Rock, who had made a joke about Pinkett Smith, Will's wife. A short time later, Will Smith won the Oscar for Best Actor.

This was not the first time that comedian Rock had made a joke at Pinkett Smith's expense. When he hosted the 2016 Oscars, some people boycotted the ceremony over the #OscarsSoWhite group of nominees, including the Smiths. Rock said then: "Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna's panties. I wasn't invited."

"This is a season of healing and I'm here for it," wrote Pinkett Smith Tuesday with a graphic on Instagram. She offered no further comment.

By resigning from the academy, Smith will no longer be among the 9,000-plus members who vote for the Oscars. He will still be eligible to be nominated in future years, although the organization could strip him of that right as part of its forthcoming disciplinary actions.
