Jacqueline Fernandez appeals for support for homeland Sri Lanka

Update : 06 Apr 2022, 12:55

Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez extended her ’empathy and support’ to her homeland Sri Lanka as the country grapples with a severe economical crisis. Sri Lanka is battling food and fuel scarcity, which is affecting a large number of the people in the island nation.

Jacqueline took to social media on Monday to address the crisis. Sharing a picture of Sri Lankan flag, Jacqueline wrote, “As a Srilankan, it is heartbreaking to see what my country and countrymen are going through. I have been flooded with a lot of opinions since this began from around the world. I would say, do not be too quick to pass a judgement and vilify any group based on what is shown. The world and my people do not need another judgement, they need empathy and support. 2-minutes of silent prayer for their strength and well-being will bring you much closer to them than a comment based on a loose grasp of the situation.”

She added, “To my country and countrymen, I am hoping this situation comes to an end soon and through means which are peaceful and for the benefit of the people. Praying for immense strength to those dealing with this. Peace to all!” She also wrote in Sinhala, “United we stand, divided we fall.”

After graduating from college, Jacqueline filmed a few TV shows in Sri Lanka. In 2006, she was named Miss Universe Sri Lanka and represented her home country at the Miss Universe 2006 pageant in Los Angeles.

Sri Lanka has been grappling with its worst economic crisis since independence in 1948. The crisis has been partially caused by a fall in the country’s foreign currency reserves, which pays for fuel imports, causing prolonged power cuts across the country and shortages of essential items like food as well as medicines.
