Adviser for the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change Syeda Rizwana Hasan has announced that tourists will be able to visit Saint Martin Island from November 1.
In response to a question from journalists at the Secretariat on Sunday (October 19), she said, “From November 1, tourists will be able to visit Saint Martin. However, whether they will be allowed to stay overnight there will be decided after discussions with the Ministry of Tourism.”
It is noteworthy that, due to a decision by the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, tourist entry to Saint Martin Island had been banned for nine months. This has had a negative impact on the island’s tourism sector. The operation of tourist ships has also been suspended for a long period. With travel being halted, the jetty is now eerily silent, and the ship staff are spending their time idle.
The government had stated that this decision was made in the interest of preserving the biodiversity and environment of Saint Martin. Efforts are underway to transform the island into a sustainable tourism area that focuses on the local community.
