The National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways on Sunday protested the recent increase in fares of  trains and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the revised fares.

The demand was made in a joint statement by Mohammad Shahid Mia, president of the organisation and its general secretary Ashish Kumar Dey.

According to the statement, the railway authority has increased train fares on six routes under the Eastern Railway, including the Dhaka–Cox’s Bazar route.

The revised fares came into effect on Saturday.

Referring to the decision to raise passenger fares by increasing tolls on various railway bridges, the civic body said train fares on these six routes have been increased five times over the last 13 years.

The leaders of the National Committee said the lives of ordinary people have already become difficult due to rising prices daily necessities.

In such a situation, the sudden hike in train fares will further aggravate the hardship of passengers.
