In protest against the implementation of the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) system and demanding the release of traders arrested in connection with the attack on the BTRC building, along with several other demands, the Mobile Business Community Bangladesh (MBCB), an organization of smartphone and gadget traders, has announced a gathering and sit-in programme in the capital Dhaka.
At the same time, the organization has declared an indefinite closure of all mobile phone shops across the country.
On Saturday (3 January), MBCB Senior Vice President Shamim Mollah said that the government has introduced the NEIR system to provide advantages to mobile companies.
He said that they had already been protesting over demands such as reducing tax rates, withdrawing various barriers imposed by the BTRC, and simplifying import policies. These demands have now been expanded to include the withdrawal of cases filed against mobile traders and the release of those who have been arrested.
He further said that in support of these demands, all mobile phone shops across the country will remain closed indefinitely. In addition, traders will hold a gathering and a sit-in programme in Dhaka tomorrow. However, the specific location of the programme has been kept confidential for security reasons.
