The newly fixed price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) will not be guaranteed to be followed at the retail level, according to the Chairman of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), Jalal Ahmed.
He made this statement on Sunday (January 4) afternoon during a press conference held at the BERC office, where the new LPG price was announced.
The BERC Chairman said, “I cannot give an absolute guarantee that the announced price will be followed at the retail level. However, the operator association is committed."
Regarding complaints of selling LPG at higher prices in the retail market, he mentioned that the National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate is conducting regular operations. He added, “I personally spoke with the Director General of Consumer Rights to increase the operations. Action will be taken if there are complaints of additional prices being charged at the production level.”
Jalal Ahmed further stated that producers are selling LPG at the price set by BERC. He said, “I will reiterate that no complaints should arise. There are some issues in the supply side, and there is a shortage—that is true.”
Earlier, BERC announced that for January, the price of a 12 kg LPG cylinder for consumers has been increased by 53 taka, bringing it to 1,306 taka. The new price came into effect from Sunday evening.
