Appellate Division judge Justice Md Rezaul Haque has been appointed to perform the duties of the Chief Justice during the absence of Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury.
The appointment was approved by the President under Article 97 of the Constitution, according to a Law Ministry notification signed by secretary Liaquat Ali Molla on 24 May.
Justice Rezaul Haque will serve as acting Chief Justice from 31 May to 5 June 2026, or until the Chief Justice resumes office after returning from abroad.
Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury is scheduled to visit Thailand for medical treatment from 31 May to 5 June.
The notification also stated that the senior-most Appellate Division judge, Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, will be in Singapore from 31 May to 6 June.
As both the Chief Justice and the senior-most Appellate Division judge will be abroad during this period, Justice Rezaul Haque—the next senior-most judge of the Appellate Division—has been entrusted with the responsibilities of the Chief Justice.
