New police uniform takes effect

Update : 01 Jul 2026, 18:19

In response to the changed circumstances, the police uniform has once again been revised. Starting Wednesday, July 1, police personnel began performing their duties in the new uniform, which consists of a dark blue or light olive shirt paired with khaki trousers.

The new uniform was seen during the inauguration of the newly constructed Barkau Police Camp at the Purbachal New Town Project in the capital. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir wore a dark blue shirt with khaki trousers, while Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed wore a light olive shirt with khaki trousers.

DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Media and Public Relations Division, Niaz, said that the new uniform officially came into use on Wednesday and would be distributed to all police personnel in phases.

Following the change of government on August 5, 2024, calls emerged for police reform, including changes to the uniform. As a result, in November 2024, the police uniform was changed to an iron-gray shirt and coffee-brownish gray trousers. However, that design received mixed reactions from officers in the field. After the current government assumed office, it decided to revise the uniform once again.

According to a new government notification issued by Police Headquarters on June 18, significant changes have been made to both the color and design of the uniform. Under the new guidelines, personnel in district police and other units will wear khaki TC twill trousers and dark blue TC plain-fabric shirts. The shirts will have four pockets and seven front buttons.

Female police personnel may choose to wear a sari. For district police and other units, the prescribed uniform is a dark blue sari with a dark blue blouse, while for the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, it is a dark blue sari with a light olive blouse. They may also wear a head covering if they wish.

The new rules specify that short-sleeved shirts should be worn during the summer and long-sleeved shirts during the winter. Pregnant female officers may wear civilian clothing with approval from their unit head. Female personnel assigned to the traffic unit may wear long-sleeved shirts or blouses throughout the year.

The colors of jerseys, cardigans, pullovers, and jackets have also been updated to match the new shirt colors. Instead of the previous iron-gray jersey, personnel are now instructed to wear a dark blue full-sleeved jersey or cardigan over the blue shirt.

The new uniform notification also clearly specifies the dress code for all police units except the District Police, APBn (Armed Police Battalion), SPBn (Special Armed Police Battalion), SB (Special Branch), CID (Criminal Investigation Department), and RAB (Rapid Action Battalion).
