The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) on Wednesday approved two separate proposals for importing 2.7 lakh tonnes of wheat to strengthen the country’s food grain stocks.
The recommendations were made at a meeting of the committee held with Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury in the chair, following proposals submitted by the Ministry of Food.
Under the first proposal, the committee recommended approving the purchase of 50,000 tonnes of wheat through an international open tender under Package-3 for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
The procurement will be implemented by the Directorate General of Food at a total cost of Tk 182.84 crore.
The wheat will be purchased at a rate of US$297.92 per tonne from Singapore-based supplier M/S Agrocorp International Pte Ltd.
In a separate decision, the committee recommended approval of a proposal to import 2.2 tonnes of wheat from the United States under the government-to-government (G2G) arrangement.
The procurement will be implemented by the Directorate General of Food at a total cost of Tk 869.56 crore.
The wheat will be purchased at a rate of US$322 per tonne.
According to the meeting decisions, the committee endorsed both proposals and recommended them for final approval.
The wheat imports are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to maintain adequate public food grain stocks and ensure food security.
