Fresh food inflation hits Dhaka kitchen markets

Update : 03 Jul 2026, 12:10

Retail prices of broiler and Sonali chickens have increased by Tk20 per kilogram within the past three to four days. Prices of potatoes, eggplants, and green chilies have also gone up at the retail level. In addition, several varieties of rice have recorded slight price increases.

According to the sellers, the higher prices of broiler chicken, eggplants, and green chilies are mainly due to supply shortages.

The information surfaced after visits to several markets in the capital including the Krishi Market, Town Hall Market, and Taltola Market in Agargaon, on Friday morning.

During the visits, it was found that broiler chicken was selling for Tk170–180 per kg at the beginning of this week. However, prices increased by Tk20 per kg three to four days ago. On Thursday, broiler chicken was selling for Tk190–200 per kg across different markets in the capital.

The price of Sonali chicken has also risen by Tk20 per kg. Last week, depending on quality, Sonali chicken sold for Tk280–330 per kg. On Thursday, it was selling for Tk300–350 per kg.

Potato prices have also increased. A month ago, potatoes were selling for Tk20–25 per kg, but they now cost Tk25–30 per kg.

According to data from the government-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), the price of locally produced garlic has increased by 15 percent over the past month. It is currently selling for Tk90–140 per kg, compared with Tk60–140 per kg a month earlier.

TCB data also show that the retail prices of fine rice varieties, such as Nazirshail and Miniket, have increased by Tk2 per kg over the past month, reaching Tk72–85 per kg. Prices of medium-grain rice varieties, including Pajam and BR-28, have risen by Tk2–3 per kg, while coarse rice has become Tk1–2 per kg more expensive.

The sharpest increase has been recorded in Chinigura, polao rice. Over the past month, its price has jumped by Tk15 per kg, with loose polao rice now selling for Tk160–170 per kg.

Vegetable prices have shown a mixed trend, although green chilies and eggplants have become more expensive over the past week.

On Thursday, green chilies were selling for Tk120–160 per kg, while eggplants were priced at Tk70–100 per kg. Both were around Tk20 per kg cheaper last week.

Ibrahim Mia, a vegetable seller at Town Hall Market in the capital’s Mohammadpur area said rainfall over several days this week disrupted vegetable supply such as green chilies and eggplants, pushing prices up. He added that prices are expected to return to previous levels once supply normalizes.
