Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today cast his vote in the presidential election at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, accompanied by BNP-nominated candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
The Prime Minister cast his ballot around 2:11 pm, shortly after voting began at 2 pm. Lawmakers greeted him by thumping their desks as he deposited his ballot in the box.
Mirza Fakhrul then cast his vote and exchanged greetings with lawmakers, including Opposition Leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman and Deputy Opposition Leader Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher.
Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram and Acting Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal were the first to cast their votes. The voting began with the recitation of the Holy Quran.
After casting his vote, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman remained in his seat for more than an hour, observing the voting process and exchanging greetings with lawmakers before leaving the chamber at 3:13 pm with BNP presidential candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin briefed lawmakers on the voting procedure before polling.
BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and opposition Jamaat-led 11-party alliance contender Col (retd) Oli Ahmad are contesting the election.
A total of 349 lawmakers are eligible to vote.
The last parliamentary voting for the presidency was held on October 8, 1991, when BNP candidate Abdur Rahman Biswas defeated Awami League candidate Badrul Haider Chowdhury by 172 votes to 92.
Since then, no voting was required in the successive presidential elections as a single candidate was elected uncontested in each election.
The presidential election is being held following the resignation of President Md Sahabuddin on July 24.
The Election Commission announced the election schedule on August 6 in line with the constitutional requirement to elect a new president within 90 days of the post falling vacant.
