Google has announced new performance standards for applications on Google Play, alongside improved app efficiency measures to address the rising cost of smartphone RAM memory and ensure smoother device operation.
Writing on the Android Developers Blog, the tech giant revealed plans to curb memory consumption in applications while streamlining data transfers and enhancing security through an upgraded zero-tap sign-in process for new devices, according to the Bangkok Post.
Google Play will introduce strict performance thresholds for Android apps and games, compelling developers to optimize memory usage and prevent excessive RAM consumption that degrades device speed.
The new criteria cover dynamic memory management (anonymous RSS plus swap), bitmap data utilization, and DEX code optimization. The measures aim to eliminate system slowdowns and prevent forced app closures caused by insufficient memory.
To assist developers in meeting the standards, Google has released tools within the Play Console to help monitor and rectify memory issues. Developers will also gain access to detailed memory usage analytics via Android Vitals to identify specific areas exceeding memory limits.
Google stated that the new thresholds will come into effect in February 2027. Applications failing to meet the requirements will be blocked from publication on Google Play, though rules may adapt alongside future Android developments.
In addition to RAM usage standards, Google will require all applications with login systems to support the zero-tap sign-in standard. The feature automatically restores login states when users transfer data from an old smartphone to a new device.
