Folie à Deux is the official title of the sequel of Joker 2. It will not only have Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role, Lady Gaga will be appearing as Harley Quinn. The sequel is also going to be a musical.
Warner Bros has a lot of hope riding on Joker 2 and its budget is double of the original film released in 2019. As per Variety, the studio has decided to increase the budget in order to pay the two leading stars, Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. The budget of the 2019 original was said to be around $55 to $70 million.
Co-written and directed by The Hangover's Todd Phillips, Joker debuted to mixed-to-positive reviews from critics, who largely praised Phoenix's performance, Phillips' direction and Hildur Guðnadóttir's score, though criticized its handling of its larger themes and familiar storytelling.
With the film having gone on to gross over $1 billion, the first and only R-rated film to do so, and winning two Oscars, all eyes were on Phillips and Phoenix to deliver a follow-up, namely as the DC Extended Universe found its own Joker floundering with Jared Leto scoring negative reviews in Suicide Squad. The sequel would finally be confirmed in mid-2022. Folie à Deux will be released on October 4, 2024.
According to Variety, both Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Phillips will be paid a massive $20 million each to return to star and direct the movie. Meanwhile, Lady Gaga has been roped to play the iconic Harley Quinn in "Joker 2", and she will be getting $10 million for the same.
The final cost of making the movie is expected to reach $150 million, including salaries, combined with the cost of producing complicated musical sequences. It is going to be one of the costliest DC films, however, it is still cheaper than most superhero movies.
