Italy denied visa to Bangladesh chess team

Update : 08 Oct 2022, 12:19

The Italian embassy in Dhaka refused to issue visas to the Bangladesh chess team, who are supposed to take part in the FIDE World Junior (U-20) Chess Championship 2022.

The Under-20 level tournament for FIDE will be held in Sardinia, Italy from 11 to 23 October. The nine-member Bangladesh team was comprised of seven players—five female and two male—one guardian of two female players and Mahmuda herself, who is also an executive committee member of the Bangladesh Chess Federation. But no one was granted a visa.

"The visa was not given due to the fear that we might "flee" if we go to Italy," said Mahmuda Chowdhury, member and team leader of Chess Federation.

"I visited the embassy and faced shocking behaviour from that official. I have visited many countries as the head of delegation, but never faced such behaviour from an embassy official. I was standing at the ground floor, he came down and said: ‘I refused all the passports. He exactly said that. He claimed that he was dealing with this issue but he did not explore his identity even though I asked his name,’ she added.

Mahmuda further said, "When I asked him what the reason was, was there any lack of papers? In reply, he said, you refugees do not come back from that country after going there."
