‘It’d be better to be president than CEO': Shakib's one-liner to BPL chief

Update : 10 Jan 2023, 16:00

Shakib Al Hasan has dropped a bombshell statement regarding a future run for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president post.

Considered to be one of the greatest Bangladesh players in history, Shakib Al Hasan is the face of his country's cricket for the past few years. The 35-year-old is currently ICC's top-ranked all-rounder in T20Is and ODIs, and is third in Test cricket. Recently, Shakib said that he could improve the standards of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), using a reference to Bollywood movie Nayak, reports Hindustan Times.

"If they made me the BPL CEO, it would take me one or two months to correct everything. You have seen the movie Nayak right? If you want to do something, you can do it in one day", he told reporters.

"I would do the players' draft and auction (on time) and hold the BPL during a free time. We will have all the modern technologies. There will be quality broadcast and home and away venues", he further added.

Responding to the 35-year-old's claim, BPL governing council chairman Sheikh Sohel welcomed him and asked him to take responsibility. "I welcome Shakib and thank him. If he wants to come as CEO of BPL, he has shown that interest. From the governing council, we welcome him. If he wants, he can come and take responsibility as CEO", Sohel said.

Speaking to reporters, Shakib had the perfect response and stated that he would prefer the post of BCB president. "It would be better to be the president than be the CEO", he said, while speaking to reporters.

Recently, Shakib was under the spotlight during a BPL match. Batting for Fortune Barishal, Shakib was annoyed when a delivery bounced high and was not called wide. The umpire called it a legitimate delivery and termed it as one bouncer for the over. What followed was Shakib screaming at the square leg umpire as soon as the ball went past him, and then almost charged at the umpire to remonstrate with him for the decision. Then, he walked to the umpire at the bowler's end and had a few words with him before walking back to the crease.

Even in 2021, Shakib had a meltdown in the Dhaka Premier League, when he kicked the stumps and later uprooted them to throw them to the ground while arguing with umpires over decisions. After the incident, he apologised for his behavior.
