Update : 09 Feb 2023, 17:33

Dhaka has once again topped the list of cities around the world with the worst air quality on Thursday (February 9).

With an air quality index (AQI) score of 225 at 8:51 am and 192 at 4:00 pm on Thursday, Dhaka ranked first in the list of cities with the worst air.

According to AQI, air pollution is to be blamed for 6,800 deaths in Dhaka in 2021.

An AQI between 151 and 200 is said to be ‘unhealthy’ while 201 and 300 is considered ‘very unhealthy’, and 301 to 400 is considered 'hazardous', posing serious health risks to residents.

In Bangladesh, the AQI is based on five criteria pollutants -- Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2 and Ozone.

Several studies showed that air pollution enhances risk of cancer, heart disease, lung-related disease and so on.
