'The Archies' becomes subject to trolls, director Zoya Akhtar reacts

Update : 24 Jun 2023, 12:44

Indian filmmaker Zoya Akhtar’s upcoming directorial film ‘The Archies’ has been subjected to trolls. The film marks the debuts of Shah Rukh Khan's daughter Suhana Khan, Sridevi’s daughter Khushi Kapoor, and Amitabh Bachchan’s grandson Agastya Nanda.

The Archies, ever since the first glimpse was officially released by the makers. The teaser of the film was unveiled during the global fan event of streaming giant Netflix in Brazil last week.

Zoya, along with The Archies cast, had attended the event. However, when the first look of the film, starring Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, Agastya Nanda, Mihir Ahuja and others was revealed in May 2022, several social media users had trolled the makers and claimed that the characters did not look Indian.

Responding to all the trolls that have been making the rounds about the musical, Zoya Akhtar was quoted on a leading entertainment portal, “Why do you think that? They're all Indian. This is kind of reverse (racism). Are you saying fair Indians are not Indians? How do we define what an Indian looks like? It could be Hrithik Roshan, it could be Mr Rajinikanth, it could be Diljit Dosanjh, it could be Mary Kom. That's the beauty of India. There are a lot of Indians that are light-skinned.”

Moreover, Farhan Akhtar’s sister was also asked to share her opinion over trolls. She told Mid-day: “I don’t know if the trolling is about my films. It’s about all films now. Everyone gets trolled!”

Last year, when the first look of ‘The Archies’ was released by the makers, a division of Netizens expressed their disappointment towards it, claiming that the characters did not look like Indians. Set in the early times of 1960s, The Archies will also be Zoya Akhtar’s fifth directorial venture after giving us some timeless gems with ‘Luck By Chance,’ ‘Gully Boy,’ and more.
