The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Hamjalal Sheikh, one of the owners of the 'MV Abhijan -10' launch in connection with the tragic fire on the Sugandha River in Jhalakathi.
The elite force arrested Hamjalal Sheikh from Keraniganj, outskirts area of Dhaka. RAB Legal and Media Wing Director Commander Khandaker Al Moin confirmed his arrest on Monday (December 27).
His arrest came after the Dhaka Marine Court issued warrants for eight persons on Sunday, including Sheikh.
Shamim Ahmed, Russell Ahmed, and Ferdous Hasan are the other owners, while Reaz Ahmed and Khalilur Rahman were the ship's masters. It was driven by Masum Billah and Abul Kalam.
The incident occurred when a massive fire broke at Barguna-bound launch carrying 1,000 people on Friday. On Saturday night, the dead toll from the fire event had risen to 41. In addition, more than 70 individuals were injured, and some are still missing.
