Update : 22 Feb 2024, 15:23

FC Barcelona legend Dani Alves has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for sexual assault by a court in Barcelona.

In addition to this, he will be forced to compensate the victim with a payment of $163,000 (€150,000) and has also been hit with a nine and a half year restraining order. Upon release, Alves will have to complete five years' worth of probation.

Alves was accused of raping a woman in a bathroom of the Sutton nightclub's VIP section in the early hours of 31 December 2022.

He was arrested three weeks after the incident and detained ever since while accused of “sexual assault with penetration”.

Prosecutors called for a nine-year prison term for Alves followed by 10 years of probation. They also wanted him to pay $163,000 (€150,000) in compensation to the victim.

The former Brazil international and three-time Champions League winner with Barca initially denied knowing the victim in a TV interview. Later, however, he admitted having sex with her but claimed it was consensual. Forbes
