Nazia Ahmed, a mother of two on Thursday, had taken her sons to have burgers in the capital’s Bailey Road area. All three of them lost their lives in the devastating fire that took place at the seven-storey Green Cozy Cottage building last night.
Family members said Nazia had called her husband Ashik when their sons were asking her to take them out to eat. As Ashik was at his workplace, he had requested Nazia to take them herself.
Rifat, a relative of the victims, said Nazia talked to her husband over the phone when the fire broke out. Amidst the chaos, her younger son got separated from them. Tragically, they all were killed in the fire.
According to Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General Brig Gen Md Main Uddin, there were no fire safety measures at the building on Bailey Road where a devastating fire last night left at least 46 people dead.
Talking to reporters in front of the Green Cozy Cottage Shopping Mall around 12:30pm, Main Uddin said, "There was no fire safety in the building. There was only a small stairwell in the whole building."
He said the department had issued three notices to the building owners previously as part of routine monitoring.
"There was monitoring, so we had given notice," he added. He also mentioned that one of the rooms where people took shelter during the fire had no windows.
