At least 58 aftershocks reported following initial Taiwan quake

Update : 03 Apr 2024, 11:37

There have been at least 58 aftershocks and two of those were larger than magnitude six. In Taipei, the impact has mostly been in disruption to travel but things are slowly getting back to normal.

Most of the damage was in Hualien, which is a county on the east coast. Hualien is known for its tourist sites and scenic spots but also for having one of the largest military bases and the military is now checking all its equipment there amid concern some of it might be damaged.

Also in Hualien about 80,000 homes are without power. Roads, bridges and even a tunnel have collapsed so there’s quite a lot of disruption and the military is working with first responders to get to the worst affected areas.

There are also a number of landslides but fortunately most of the areas where they took place are quite sparsely populated. The damage is quite extreme [in the city] with a large number of buildings tilting at this point, and being closely monitored in case of further collapses.
