Friendship Hospital in Satkhira named world's best building by RIBA

Update : 26 Jan 2022, 15:23

The Friendship Hospital is a low-cost hospital in Shyamnagar upazila, Satkhira, serves tens of thousands of people in the area. This hospital has won the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) worldwide prize 2021 as the greatest new building in the world.

The site has been bisected by a zigzagging "channel" designed by Kashef Chowdhury, which separates the inpatients and outpatients while also helping to cool the structure.

This hospital was selected as the winner from a shortlist of three projects, which included James-Simon-Galerie by David Chipperfield Architects and Lille Langebro by WilkinsonEyre and Urban Agency..

The structure, which is surrounded by shrimp fishery, is made up of a succession of low-lying pavilions built of locally produced brick and interspersed with courtyards.

These courtyards are intended to naturally light and air the hospital wards, as well as provide resting areas for patients and visitors.

Corridors and double-layered arches shade the hospital's more delicate parts, hiding them from the tropical sun.

The institute selected the 'uplifting' brick-built community hospital for its 2021 International Prize from a three-strong shortlist that includes David Chipperfield Architects' James Simon Galerie addition in Berlin and WilkinsonEyre's Lille Langebro cycle and pedestrian bridge in Copenhagen.

The RIBA characterized the 'no-nonsense' 80-bed hospital as having the 'potential to be a sustainable and inexpensive template for additional clinical institutions in remote locations' because it cost only £1.5 million to build.

A panel led by French architect Odile Decq and featuring British artist and designer Es Devlin and US architect Richard Meier chose the 4,777 m2 proposal.
