Bangladesh and India Strengthen Ties with Seven New Agreements

Update : 22 Jun 2024, 16:28

Bangladesh and India have fortified their bilateral ties by signing ten Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), which is a significant step in enhancing cooperation across various sectors. The agreements, comprising seven new and three renewals, were inked in the presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh and her Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, during her two-day state visit to India.

The MoUs were signed following extensive talks at New Delhi's Hyderabad House, covering many issues including connectivity, energy, water resource management, and security.

Significant among the new MoUs is the agreement on Blue Economy and Maritime Cooperation, aimed at fostering collaboration in the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean region. Another notable agreement involves the Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute (BORI) and India’s Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), focusing on joint oceanographic research and capacity building.

Additional agreements include enhancing rail connectivity and launching joint initiatives under the India-Bangladesh Digital Partnership and the Green Partnership frameworks for a sustainable future. The two nations also agreed on a collaboration for a joint small satellite project through the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACE) and Bangladesh’s Ministry of Posts, Telecommunication, and Information Technology.

Renewed MoUs encompass continued cooperation in fisheries, disaster management, and health and medicine sectors, reaffirming the longstanding collaborative spirit between the two neighboring countries.
