Update : 12 Oct 2024, 20:30

Police arrested four individuals on Saturday in connection with the theft of a gold crown from Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple in Shyamnagar upazila, Satkhira.

The identities of the arrested individuals have not yet been revealed.

The temple's priest, Jyoti Prakash Chattopadhyay, filed a case at Shyamnagar police station regarding the incident.

Earlier on Saturday, India expressed concern over the incident through a Facebook post on the official page of the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh.

"We express concern on the incident and urge the Government of Bangladesh to investigate the theft, recover the crown and take action against the perpetrators," the post read.

During his Bagaldesh visit, the crown was gifted by Narendra Modi on 27 March 2021.

The silver, gold-plated crown adorning the head of Goddess Kali went missing on Thursday afternoon, shortly after the temple priest ended the day's worship rituals. The cleaning staff discovered the absence of the crown later in the day.

The high commission of India in Bangladesh has expressed "deep concern" over reports.

The Jeshoreshwari Temple holds great significance in Hindu mythology, being recognized as one of the 51 Shakti Peeths scattered across India and its neighboring countries. The name "Jeshoreshwari" translates to "Goddess of Jeshore".
