Eggs are scarce across the city, with a few shops in Tejgaon's wholesale market selling them at 180 taka per dozen. Sellers report difficulty sourcing eggs from other wholesale markets, relying on limited stock from alternative sources.
For the past two days, the egg supply to Tejgaon has been disrupted. Though domestic chicken and duck eggs are available, they are in short supply.
Regular inspections by the Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection to enforce price controls have led traders in Tejgaon to halt sales, creating shortages in markets dependent on Tejgaon supplies.
Despite government efforts, prices remain high, with some markets selling eggs for 180-190 taka per dozen. A Tejgaon trader, speaking anonymously, said he’s avoiding selling eggs to escape fines for exceeding the 180 taka price limit.
Egg prices have been steadily rising since mid-2022, exceeding 150 taka per dozen and now reaching 180 taka. In August, the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) reported prices between 150-162 taka per dozen.
Farmers attribute the price hikes to rising production costs and supply issues, even as the government recently approved the import of 4.5 crore eggs.
