Bangladesh bags $1.61bn in remittance in 17 days

The inflow of remittances to Bangladesh through legal channels has increased significantly. Especially after the interim government took charge, remittances have been breaking records one after another.

In March and April, the country witnessed the highest and second-highest monthly remittance inflows in its history, respectively.

This momentum seems to be continuing in May as well. In the first 17 days of this month, $1.61 billion in remittances have been sent to Bangladesh, which amounts to approximately BDT 19,642 crores (calculated at BDT 122 per dollar).

On average, the country received $94.7 million daily during this period. If this trend continues, remittance inflows may surpass $3 billion this month, according to the latest report by Bangladesh Bank released on Sunday.

Breakdown of Remittance Sources:

State-owned banks: $493.3 million

Specialized banks (including Krishi Bank): Over $150 million

Private banks: $962.76 million

Meanwhile, nine banks reported zero remittance inflows during this period, including the Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (specialized), and private banks like Community Bank, Citizens Bank, ICB Islami Bank, Padma Bank, and Shimanto Bank PLC. Among foreign banks, Habib Bank, National Bank of Pakistan, and State Bank of India reported no inflows.
