COVID returns quietly, 15 fresh cases logged

Fifteen more people in the country have been diagnosed with coronavirus infection. However, no deaths from COVID-19 were reported during this time. With this, a total of 82 people have been infected with the virus so far this month.

This information was shared in the regular COVID-19 press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday (June 12). According to the report, in the 24 hours prior to 8 a.m. today, samples from 134 individuals were tested.

In the past 24 hours, 18 patients have recovered from the virus. With this, the total number of recovered patients stands at 2,019,398.

The last reported COVID-19 death was on the previous Thursday, according to DGHS. So far, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of approximately 29,500 people in the country. The total number of confirmed infections has reached 2,051,785.

The government first announced the detection of coronavirus in Bangladesh on March 8, 2020. The first death from the virus was reported on March 18 of the same year. Three years later, in May 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared an end to the global public health emergency related to COVID-19.

In mid-January 2024, a patient infected with the JN.1 subvariant of the Omicron strain was identified in Bangladesh. Due to its rapid transmission, the WHO has classified JN.1 as a "variant of interest."
