Another 660 tonnes of onions arrive from India

Another consignment of 660 metric tonnes of onions has arrived in Bangladesh from India through the Sonamasjid land port in Chapainawabganj.

The consignment entered the country on Sunday evening in 23 trucks, said Kamal Hossain, Manager (Operations) of Panama Sonamasjid Port Link Limited, which operates the port, UNB reports.

He said this is the second shipment since the government permitted onion imports to control soaring prices in the domestic market. The first consignment of 100 metric tonnes arrived last Thursday, marking the resumption of imports after an eight-month pause.

The import follows a directive from Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin, who announced the move on Tuesday (August 12) in an effort to stabilise onion prices ahead of the upcoming season.
