Winter has tightened its grip across the country. Temperatures are gradually dropping in different regions under the impact of chilly winds. Meanwhile, a new cold wave named ‘Konkon’ is heading toward the country. Weather monitoring agencies say the upcoming cold wave may intensify the cold further over the next few days.
In a message posted on its Facebook page on Sunday, the Bangladesh Weather Observation Team (BWOT) said the cold wave Konkon may persist either from 28 December to 7 January or from 31 December to 7 January.
According to their forecast, the cold wave will be felt most strongly in the Rajshahi and Khulna divisions. In addition, cold intensity may remain high in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet, and the districts of Gopalganj, Faridpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Tangail, Manikganj, Brahmanbaria, Cumilla, Chandpur, and surrounding areas.
Some parts of the Barishal and Chattogram divisions may experience a comparatively milder impact of the cold wave. Although winter conditions will prevail in coastal areas, Dhaka, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, and Bandarban, the cold wave may not be as severe there. However, temperatures could drop significantly in parts of the southwestern and northern regions.
BWOT estimates that temperatures may fall to 6–8 degrees Celsius in areas including Chuadanga, Meherpur, Jhenaidah, Kushtia, Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi, Naogaon, Pabna, Bogura, Natore, Narail, Jashore, Faridpur, Gopalganj, Magura, and Rajbari, along with nearby regions. The cold wave is expected to begin earlier in these areas compared to other parts of the country.
