Severe cold spells likely ahead

The cold wave sweeping across the country may intensify further over the next few days. In this situation, there are concerns that the minimum temperature in different regions of the country could drop to between 5 and 7 degrees Celsius on Thursday (8 January).

On Wednesday (7 January), weather and climate researcher Mostafa Kamal Palash of the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, made this forecast after analyzing data obtained from European Union artificial satellites.

In a Facebook post, meteorologist Palash said that the intensity of the cold wave could increase further from Thursday morning. Around 6:00 am, the minimum temperature in several districts of the Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Khulna divisions is likely to fall to between 5 and 7 degrees Celsius.

He further wrote that the cold wave may intensify even more on Saturday (10 January) and Sunday (11 January). During this period, the minimum temperature in districts of the Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Khulna divisions could drop to between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius.

According to the information mentioned in the post, the country’s lowest temperature on Wednesday at 6:00 am was recorded in Rajshahi district at 6.8 degrees Celsius. In addition, Chuadanga and Gopalganj recorded 7 degrees Celsius, Jashore 7.4 degrees, Panchagarh 8.2 degrees, while Dhaka recorded a minimum temperature of 11 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologist Palash also said that by 6:00 am on Wednesday, a cold wave had passed over five of the country’s eight divisions.
