The residents of the capital city, Dhaka, witnessed a prolonged rain since early Sunday, while the sky remained clouded although the previous day witnessed an extreme level of heat across the country.
The rain has caused waterlogging on several streets across Dhaka. Streets in areas including Purana Paltan, in front of Khilgaon Community Centre, Malibagh Railgate Bazar, Mouchak intersection, Moghbazar Century intersection, South Monipur Mollapara and West Shewrapara Border Bazar have been inundated.
In some places, the water has reached knee level. People were seen wading through the water on their way to schools, colleges and workplaces.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s (BMD) 120-hour forecast issued yesterday, a low-pressure area has formed over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining areas. It may intensify further and could develop into a depression.
As per the BMD forecast, rain may occur in various parts of the Dhaka, Sylhet, Khulna, Barisal, Rangpur, Chattogram, Rajshahi and Mymensingh divisions today. Some areas may experience light to moderate rain, while others could receive heavy rainfall.
Earlier, a heatwave persisted for two consecutive days on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday, 25 districts were experiencing a heatwave. According to Meteorological Department sources, some parts of the country may continue to experience heatwave conditions today.
Meanwhile, a low-pressure system is expected to form over the sea. It could intensify into a depression or deep depression. However, its impact is likely to be greater along the coasts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh in India.
The Meteorological Department also said the likelihood of rain could increase from Tuesday. On that day, rain is forecast in many places across the Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and in some areas of several other divisions. Some areas may also experience moderate to heavy rainfall.
