The winter may begin to set in across Bangladesh, including the capital Dhaka, in the third week of November.
Based on weather patterns over the past four to five years, the winter season is expected to continue until February. The cold is likely to intensify from late December and persist throughout January, with chilly conditions potentially continuing into mid-February. Daytime temperatures may begin to rise after mid-February.
Dhaka may experience temperatures as low as 11-13 degrees Celsius during the winter, said Bangladesh Metrological Department (BMD) official AKM Nazmul Hoque, adding that a more reliable assessment could be made after a survey report becomes available.
Winds have already started blowing from the north in Dhaka, signalling a possible shift towards cooler weather. However, residents of the densely populated capital may begin to feel the effects of winter more distinctly from the third week of November.
Nazmul Hoque said winter is expected to spread across Bangladesh from the third week of November and continue until mid-February.
However, the country's northeastern and northwestern regions are likely to experience the onset of winter as early as the first week of November.
He said cold conditions would intensify from December and persist through January, with the peak of winter expected during this period.
Available meteorological data show that the minimum temperature in Dhaka was recorded at 17.5øC in November 2025, 13.5øC in December 2025 and 11.9øC on January 7, 2026.
In previous years, the minimum temperature in Dhaka dropped to 13.2øC on January 11, 2025, and 11øC on January 23, 2024. The minimum temperature was recorded at 13.9øC in December 2024 and 18øC in November 2024.
In northern Bangladesh, particularly Panchagarh and Thakurgaon districts, residents have been experiencing cooler temperatures and fog since early October.
Tetulia in Panchagarh recorded a minimum temperature of 19.3 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and 19.5 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. In contrast, Dhaka recorded a maximum temperature of 36.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
The temperature variations highlight the differences in weather conditions between northern Bangladesh and the capital as the country gradually moves towards the winter season.
The expected timing and intensity of winter will depend on evolving weather conditions and official meteorological assessments.
