Teachers are more than professionals—they embody responsibility and ideals. No society can progress by disrespecting them. Honoring teachers is not just their right; it is a prerequisite for societal advancement. Ensuring the dignity and protection of teachers is a core duty of any civilized society aiming for an enlightened future.
In Bangladesh, teachers have historically contributed significantly to societal development and the pursuit of knowledge. Yet, in recent years, instances of disrespect, harassment, and even physical abuse against teachers have tarnished their working environment. Such actions are deeply concerning and indicate a moral decline in society.
Teachers shape future generations, instilling knowledge, values, and a sense of responsibility. Their influence goes beyond education—they cultivate humane and ethical citizens. Across cultures, teachers are revered. In ancient times, they were called "Gurus," a term symbolizing their role in guiding from darkness to light. Students' loyalty to their Gurus was absolute, and society placed them on par with or even above parental figures.
Philosopher Plato, in Republic, highlighted the role of education in leading society toward justice and progress, with teachers as its cornerstone. In developed countries, teachers receive respect and remuneration comparable to doctors and engineers. For instance, Japan holds teachers in high regard, seeing them as symbols of justice. Even a Japanese king once remarked, "My teachers are the real kings. I follow their instructions." Similarly, in the U.S., Teachers' Day celebrates their contributions.
Bangladesh has a tradition of respecting teachers, where a school principal's guidance was once valued as parental advice. Unfortunately, recent incidents of insult and abuse against teachers indicate a worrying societal decline. While teachers, like all humans, can make mistakes, these should be addressed with dignity. Disrespecting teachers erodes not only their personal esteem but also societal values.
Rabindranath Tagore’s play Achalayatan vividly portrays the consequences of disregarding teachers. It highlights the tragedy of a society where teachers are dismissed as irrelevant—a warning of the grim future awaiting such a society.
Let us not forget: the respect we accord teachers reflects the aspirations we hold for our society's future. Protecting their dignity is essential for collective progress.
