Cold wave continues, mercury likely to rise

Update : 10 Jan 2025, 22:09

Winter has firmly settled across the country, causing widespread discomfort in both urban and rural areas as people struggle with the cold.

A mild to moderate cold wave is currently sweeping through ten districts, and this may persist in certain areas over the next 24 hours. During this period, however, nighttime and daytime temperatures are expected to rise slightly.

This information was shared in a 72-hour weather forecast issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) starting from 6 PM on Friday.

The forecast indicates that an extension of the subcontinental high-pressure system stretches across West Bengal and into the western parts of Bangladesh.

Concurrently, a seasonal low-pressure area remains positioned over the South Bay of Bengal, with its influence extending to the North Bay of Bengal.

Under these atmospheric conditions, the country is likely to experience predominantly dry weather until 6 PM on Saturday, January 11.

Partly cloudy skies are expected in some areas, and light to moderate fog may form from midnight to morning in various parts of the country.

The BMD noted that a mild to moderate cold wave is presently affecting the districts of Rajshahi, Pabna, Naogaon, Dinajpur, Panchagarh, Jashore, Kushtia, Chuadanga, Moulvibazar, and Gopalganj.

This cold wave is anticipated to persist in some regions over the next 24 hours, though a slight rise in both daytime and nighttime temperatures is expected nationwide.

Looking further ahead, the forecast suggests that dry weather with partly cloudy skies will continue across the country until 6 PM on Sunday. From midnight to morning, moderate to dense fog is expected in parts of the western and northwestern regions, while light to moderate fog may occur in other areas.

Temperatures during both day and night are likely to increase slightly.

For Monday, January 13, dry weather with partly cloudy skies is also anticipated to prevail until 6 PM. During this time, moderate to dense fog may develop in some areas from midnight to morning.

While nighttime temperatures might rise slightly, daytime temperatures could see a minor decline. However, the extended five-day forecast predicts a slight decrease in temperatures as the week progresses.
