The Election Commission (EC) has extended the deadline for new voter registration from 30 June to 31 July to ensure eligible citizens can vote in the upcoming national election.
Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud announced the decision to reporters at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Thursday (2 July).
He said election officials had submitted a plan outlining the timeline for various election-related activities. Based on that plan, the Commission reviewed how long the voter list update process could continue. Necessary amendments have also been made to the voter registration law to facilitate the extension, and the revised provisions will be published soon.
Masud said the previous deadline for new voter registration was 30 June. However, following requests from election officials and considering practical realities, the Commission decided to extend it until 31 July. Those who register as voters within this period will be eligible to cast their ballots in the next national election.
He added that officials have assured the Commission there would be no difficulty in maintaining the extended deadline if the election is held in October. A list identifying areas that may require additional polling stations has also been prepared.
